Adapun ejaannya (spelling) bisa sama atau berbeda. Jika ejaannya sama, homophone termasuk juga dalam homonym dan homograph. Pada definisi yang lebih longgar, homophone disamakan dengan homonym meskipun ejaan kata-katanya berbeda. Karena kemiripan pelafalannya, homophone kerap membingungkan.
